Born in Leeuwarden, Holland at the year 1898. He was the youngest son G.A. Escher a hydraulic engineer.
In 1919 he studied graphics technique at the School of Architecture and Ornamental Design with Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita.
In 1922 he left art school an moved to Italy. Lived in Siena where his first woodcuts of Italian landscapes were produced.
In 1924 he married Jetta Umiker an moved to live in Rome.
In 1935 when the political climate in Italy became unacceptable, the family moved to live in Switzerland at Chateau d'Oex, where they stayed for two winters. Escher described thet period as "spiritual torment".
Between The years of 1936-1937 a shipping company accepted a proposal to pay for a cruise for himself and his wife with forty-eight prints- four copies each of twelve prints - which he would create from scetches made en route. This voyage, including travels to the south of spain, profoundly influenced Escher's work.
In 1937 he moved to Ukkel, near Brussels Belgium.
Later in 1941 he move back to Baarn, Holland where he enjoyed his best and most prolific period.
Escher ceased working in 1962 due to ill health.
He died at 1971 in Rosa-Spier Home in Laren, in the province of North Holland, at the age of 73.
